Winter Survival Guide for your Quintessential Cedar Shake Roofs

Among the most aesthetically appealing roof designs, Cedar Shake roof are rustic and add a lot of charm to your home. Quite unlike other types of roofs, this is made out of cedar shingles and is known to be extremely strong. These roofs are also able to easily sustain in harsh external climates and are known to act as a natural prevention to mildew, mold and breeding of insects.



However, in spite of being one of the most beautiful options available in the market, it does demand a significant amount of care. This is true particularly before the winters. Without regular maintenance homeowners living in areas with harsh rain and snow may have to invest in expensive roof repairs.



It is thus important that you get proactive towards protecting your cedar shake roof before the winters set in.



Surviving the Winter

If you intend to survive the harsh winters, here are a few tips that you need to keep in mind-



1. Getting all the Debris Cleared – Dead leaves, wayward branches and other debris are among the biggest threats to the integrity of your roof. Especially so, during the fall and during the first few weeks of winter when fast winds result in the falling of leaves, leaving behind a lot of debris. Make sure you are proactive about clearing this debris. Also, find a way to trim any trees with branches that are falling on your roof. This will prevent collection of falling branches and leaves on your roof.



2. Checking for Damages – It is important to note that cedar shake tiles tend to expand and contract in different climatic conditions and temperatures. Over a period of time, there a possibility that this phenomenon causes cracks. Conduct necessary roof repairs as soon as you find any cracks in your roof. By doing so, you are preventing future leaks and serious roof damage. If you are not able to inspect or repair your roof regularly, take help of an experienced roof repairing service to do the job.



3. Using Preserving Solutions – The market as a range of cedar shake tiles that are either water-based or oil –based. To preserve these tiles, you can select those which include zinc or copper naphthenate, copper-8 quinolinolate, TCMTB or MTC, butyl carbamate polyphase or tributyltin oxide. You can take the advice of a professional repair service or the tile vendor before you make your final decision.

By following these simple steps, you will be able to make sure that your roof is ready to survive the winters with great ease.
